TWICE made a comeback with its new song "Signal" on May 15. How do you like the song? Well, as the girl group topped a variety of music charts, it seems like its comeback is quite successful. By the way, apart from it, "Signal" is getting terrible reviews from k-pop columnists. Do you know why?
You know, it's the first time that Park Jin Young took part in writing the title track of TWICE, while the TWICE members feel very happy about it. But, unfortunately, Park Jin Young failed to emphasize the lovely members' strength. I mean, it's ok that "Signal" is totally different from TWICE's previous hits such as "Cheer Up" and "TT", but the problem is that "Signal" is not the song which can maximize the members' lovely charm.
TWICE could become the hottest k-pop girl group because the members gave off their lovely and fresh charm through their catchy and cheerful songs. However, through "Signal", Park Jin Young just tried to show his own musical characteristics, instead of focusing on emphasizing TWICE's fascination. In a word, "Signal" is Park Jin Young's song, not TWICE's song.
What’s worse is that the song is not catchy and fresh at all. Park Jin Young seems a little too old. Well, Black Eyed Pilseung, who wrote TWICE's previous hits should have took part in writing the girl group's title track again.
Check out other k-pop columnists' opinions too.
Kang Myungsuk
"Signal" is a startling crude piece of music.
Kim Sunjoo
To my regret, I feel a separation between their music video and style concept.
Seo Sungduk
It seems hard for TWICE to surmount "Signal" only with their highlight dance.
Hwang Hyojin
All that remained are TWICE's aegyo and costumes.
Bokgil
It's not worth talking about the song except for the fact that it is TWICE's song.
1988–2009: Early life and debut G-Dragon began his career at age five as part of the group Little Roo Ra. After releasing a Christmas album, the group's contract was terminated by their record company, which came as a shock to G-Dragon. After then, he was scouted by SM Entertainment while on a ski trip with his family. He was a trainee under the record label for five years, specializing in dance before he left, unclear about what he wanted to do. In third grade, G-Dragon was introduced to the American rap group Wu-Tang Clan by a friend. Inspired by their music, he developed an interest in rapping and began taking classes. Under People Crew's tutelage, he participated in the release of the Korean hip-hop album Flex in 2001, becoming the youngest Korean rapper at just 13 years old. Although he wrote his own lyrics, he admitted that his English was weak and the story behind the lyrics was just another typical "I'm young, but I'm the best." Additionall...
"Do k-pop idols really sing live? It's not an easy question to answer because the answer to the question could be both yes and no. Well, I want to talk about details about k-pop idols' live performance on the stage. Have you heard about MR, AR, LMR, and LAR? If you get to know about these terms, you will be able to have a good understanding of k-pop idols' live performance." MR(Music Recorded) Basically, MR means instrumental accompaniment. Have you been to karaoke? MR is like karaoke music which doesn’t contain the sound of singer’s voice. However, there is no k-pop idol who uses such a clear MR, while all the k-pop idols’ MR contains sounds of their voices. Before performing their songs on k-pop chart shows, k-pop idols should make their MR, and the way how they make MR is to decrease the sound volume of their voices in original music, while keeping the sound volume of instrumental accompaniment as it is. So, to k-pop idols, singing to MR doesn’t j...
