As it was revealed days ago, 2NE1's CL will release her new song in the United States next spring. On November 1, Scooter Braun, who helped global star Psy's activities in the U.S and will be a reliable supporter for CL, confirmed the news by posting the female Kpop star's photo on his official website, stating, "Welcome to the SB projects. Family, CL!"
CL debuted in 2009 as a member of 2NE1 and has gained great popularity in Korea. She now is one of the most popular female Kpop stars along with Girls' Generation's Yoona, Miss A's Suzy, 4minute's Hyuna, and more. Everyone in Korea expects that CL will achieve excellent results in the U.S music market, but as you know, the proof of the pudding is in the eating. Do you think CL will be able to win a bug success in the country?
To guess the possibility of CL's success in the U.S music market, we need to compare her with 4minute's Hyuna and Lee Hyori. Hyuna, who is well known as one of the sexiest young kpop solo female stars, is familiar to the U.S music fans because she appeared on the music video of Psy's mega hit 'Gangnam Style'. Lee Hyori, who debuted in 1998 as a member of legendary kpop girl group Fin.K.L, has been recognized as a sexy queen of kpop world for more than 10 years.
In Korea, Hyuna sometimes is caught in controversy because of her lack of ability in singing and rapping. However, she has great dance moves and as you can see, she is beautiful. She wrote the lyrics of some tracks from her latest album 'A talk' that was released last July, but her songwriting ability was not that impressive.
Just like Hyuna, Lee Hyori once has been embroiled in controversy because of her lack of musicality. However, she showed off her pretty good songwriting skills through her album 'Monochrome' that was released in 2013, and she also showed impressive performance as a producer of kpop girl group Spica. As her husband is Korea's famous musician Lee Sang Soon and she runs around with his friends who are active as songwriters, Lee Hyori is getting mature as a musician, while the sexy and beautiful star still is a symbolic presence in the world of kpop.
Let's talk about CL now. The female star, who is not regarded as a typical beauty but at the same time is regarded as one the most fashionable female kpop stars, is well know for her outstanding singing and rapping ability. (I've worked in the U.S army years ago, and many of my American friends' girlfriends had eyes which were quite similar to CL's. I'm not certain, but I think the U.S music fans will like CL's appearance.)
CL also showed off her songwriting skills by taking part in writing 2NE1's songs such as 'Crush', 'If I were you', 'MTBD', and 'Baby I miss you', while her fluent English skill will be a great help to her when she will promote her song in the U.S music market.
Well, I'm not still sure if CL will be able to win a big success in the U.S music market. But, as a female solo singer, she has a sufficient musicality and it is also notable that she does hip hop music which is the mainstream of American music.
So, what do you think? Do you think CL's new challenge will produce a successful outcome?
Have you ever been curious about k-pop idols' microphones? Unless you are a professional, it’s difficult to know the details about the microphones. However, there’s a very simple way to make a guess at what kind of microphone your favorite idol star uses. Well, the way is to classify the microphones by their colors. Colors of microphones do not always mean everything, but like I said, you can at least make a guess at what kind of microphones those are. Flesh-Colored Microphone You might see the flesh-colored microphones frequently in various k-pop chart shows. Those are the basic microphones offered by the broadcasting company. People in the k-pop world usually call it "Band-Aid." The microphone is cheap, and it doesn't perform well. However, it doesn't matter because not a few incompetent idols depend on their AR and just pretend to sing live. Black Microphone The black microphone is not offered by the broadcasting company. If an idol group's...
"Do k-pop idols really sing live? It's not an easy question to answer because the answer to the question could be both yes and no. Well, I want to talk about details about k-pop idols' live performance on the stage. Have you heard about MR, AR, LMR, and LAR? If you get to know about these terms, you will be able to have a good understanding of k-pop idols' live performance." MR(Music Recorded) Basically, MR means instrumental accompaniment. Have you been to karaoke? MR is like karaoke music which doesn’t contain the sound of singer’s voice. However, there is no k-pop idol who uses such a clear MR, while all the k-pop idols’ MR contains sounds of their voices. Before performing their songs on k-pop chart shows, k-pop idols should make their MR, and the way how they make MR is to decrease the sound volume of their voices in original music, while keeping the sound volume of instrumental accompaniment as it is. So, to k-pop idols, singing to MR doesn’t j...
As SM entertainment announced recently, the agency's new girl group is about to debut. The girl group is comprised of 4 members, Seulgi, Irene, Wendy, and Joy, while all the expectations of Kpop fans are falling on their shoulders. Then, don't you wonder how the 4 girls become SM's new girl group members? Let's see. Seulgi was selected as SM's trainee through the agency's open audition took place in 2007, while Irene was chosen by SM in 2009. And Wendy passed the agency's global audition took place in Canada in 2012. If you want to be SM's trainee as a foreigner, Wendy may be a perfect example for you. Joy passed SM's global audition took place in Seoul in 2012. When you have an audition, the most important thing is to differentiate yourself from other participants because there are so many people who want to be selected as one of the big agency's trainees. Well, the 4 girls have something in common. Seulgi can sing, dance, play a ...
TVXQ As a k-pop journalist, I’ve been trying to find a way of deciding k-pop idol groups’ rankings more objectively. So I’ve asked several people in the k-pop industry for the objective standard to decide the rankings, and some of them gave me a hint about it. Well, what they told me was that I should apply different standards to boy groups and girl groups. EXO Popular boy groups usually have their enthusiastic fandom because most of their fans are teenage girls, and what people in the k-pop industry told me was the size of the fan base and the passion of the fans are factors to consider first when I decide k-pop boy groups’ rankings. Then, how can we express the size of the fan base and the passion of the fans numerically? Well, the size of the fan base can be measured by whether a boy group can hold a large-scale concert. The Olympic Gymnastics Stadium, the biggest indoor concert hall in Korea, can accommodate about 10,000 audiences, while just a few k-pop boy groups ca...
1988–2009: Early life and debut G-Dragon began his career at age five as part of the group Little Roo Ra. After releasing a Christmas album, the group's contract was terminated by their record company, which came as a shock to G-Dragon. After then, he was scouted by SM Entertainment while on a ski trip with his family. He was a trainee under the record label for five years, specializing in dance before he left, unclear about what he wanted to do. In third grade, G-Dragon was introduced to the American rap group Wu-Tang Clan by a friend. Inspired by their music, he developed an interest in rapping and began taking classes. Under People Crew's tutelage, he participated in the release of the Korean hip-hop album Flex in 2001, becoming the youngest Korean rapper at just 13 years old. Although he wrote his own lyrics, he admitted that his English was weak and the story behind the lyrics was just another typical "I'm young, but I'm the best." Additionall...
